Our Work Together

The first step towards healing is to courageously search for one’s own authentic self and identity by looking inward, which at times can be a frightening process into an unknown territory. Let me be your guide to help you in navigating through your search for meaning by assisting you in putting those fragmented pieces together in order to complete the puzzle of your own life without judgment or shame. You will not be alone through this process, because the therapeutic frame and our relationship will be built on collaboration, care, and trust.

About Me

To provide you with some background history of my development, I previously trained at Wright Institute Los Angeles, Children's Hospital Los Angeles (subset training facilities-LAYN Group Homes, Youth Center on Highland, and Covenant House), Hillmont House-ANKA Behavioral Health, Tarzana Treatment Center, and Airport Marina Counseling Center working with multicultural and LGBTQI at risk youth, young adults, adults, and couples with co-occurring disorders including Adjustment Disorders, Schizophrenia, Anxiety and Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder I & II, Borderline, and Substance Abuse and Dependence in the Ventura County and Los Angeles County communities.

My Approach

I recognize your experiences are unique and I have an empathetic approach.  I am very passionate about helping others embrace their own identities through self-empowerment, while following the principles of Psychodynamic, Psychoanalytic, Object Relations, Cognitive-Behavioral theories, and Humanistic Approach to therapy.  While applying these approaches, I am also attending to the integration of your own cultural and familial background as influences on who you are today. My areas of interest are forgiveness practices to help others overcome trauma.

To further give you insight of who I am as a clinician I would like to share with you my favorite quote by Maya Angelou: “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leap fence, penetrates walls to arrive at it’s destination of hope.”

Let's begin the process of therapy together today.

Shemetra James, Psy.D. is a Registered Psychological Assistant (PSB9404444) under the supervision of Jessica McDonald, Psy.D. (PSY29854).
